Analysis of Materials:

Prior to the supervision of any monument construction is the essential analysis and identifiction of the distinguishing characteristics of the constructive materials "Gabinete del Color" has their own exclusive laboratory to aid the identification of the major constituents of the colours and mortars, layers, lime, sgraffiti, stucco etc. We work together with the highest Board of Scientific Investigations of Barcelona (Instituto "Jaume Almera"), the General Laboratory of Analysis of the Generalitat of Catalunya (Applus) and the University of Barcelona (UB, UPC) Institute Eduardo Torroja when specialist scientific teams are required.

To date we have completed more than 5000 material analyses in the areas of architecture, archaeology and restoration. The analyses have been mainly of mortar and paint but also include other construction materials (stone, wood, iron, etc). We utilize a variety of scientific techniques such as:

Espectroscopia de infrarrojos por transformada de Fourier (FTIR).
Espectroscopia Ramman-Láser por fibra óptica.
Análisis de texturas y acabados mediante rugosímetro-perfilómetro.
Análisis de imagen de materiales férricos e inorgánicos.
Análisis químico cuantitativo y cualitativo.
Control ambiental de depósitos y pátinas.
Ensayos de envejecimiento acelerado de materiales y tratamientos.
Valoración de tratamientos de conservación y restauración.
Análisis de estabilidad cromática espectrofotométrica y comparada.
Estudios no destructivos de productos sobre probetas.
Ensayos de permeabilidad, higroscopicidad, resistencia, adherencia, color, etc.
Apoyo gráfico a la restauración (termografía, fotogrametría, topografía, renderización, etc.).
Apoyo documental previo a la intervención (histórico-artístico, iconográfico, archivístico, bibliográfico, etc.).
Control de pinturas, revocos y materiales de fachadas según las Actuales Normas Armonizadas Europeas UNE-EN ISO 2004.

But all these scientific technical resources demand a multi-disciplinary interpretation and it's adaptation of the needs of every monument. Our work consists of gathering together the needs of the restorer, visiting the work, making the smallest essential samples, determining the most appropriate analysis and issuing an objective substantiated report on the original materials and the recommended restoration procedure.
